# Gematria of Tarot and ROTA In Aleister Crowley's system TARO is the keyword that represents the Holy Guardian Angel (HGA) or Augoeides, and the Law represented by the A∴A∴. Here is an analysis of TARO and why it is so important. But first we need to analyse the popular spelling, tarot. "Tarot" is the popular name of the set of 78 cards used for divination. Some folks pronounce it literally with the final T, but most, including myself say TARO. Students of tarot who go deeper into the esoteric aspects beyond divination will use gematria, but not for the word Tarot. Why? The answer is easy. There is very little gematria value to tarot! ## ARO is the root Taking ARO as the constant of 271, we see the two T's as either Teth 9 or Tau 400. This gives us three possible totals: 271 + 9 + 9 = 289 271 + 9 + 400 = 680 271 + 400 + 400 = 1071 289 is chiefly interesting because it is 17 x 17, the number of The Star. 289 is also PRT, "Particular" and PRT "an aperture or opening" 680 yields only one result, PRTh or Euphrates, one of the four rivers of Eden, which is good. 1071 has no useful gematria insights. In essence, the word Tarot has no intrinsic magical power, and it is extremely limited. On the other hand, Tarot is an excellent magical word for gaslighting! 271 is more interesting, for it is ARO Earth, while LAMR pertains to "speech" and AMYRH value 256, a number of Mercury. 271 is the number of VHRYN, an angel of 9 of Wands, the card of healing. ## The Secret Word Aleister Crowley pushes out on 271 with MTzThBTzM, "The Secret Word". Obviously the gematria of this word is 662 or 1222, neither of which are particularly useful. Crowley relates this word to colour magick, which is another topic. What is interesting is that this word appears in Liber 671. here is the verse: > Sign of the Enterer: Homage to Thee, Lord of the Word! Sign of Silence: Lord of Silence, Homage to Thee! > Repeat both Signs: Lord we adore Thee, still & stirred Beyond Infinity. > The Secret Word: MTzThBTzM–271 (Blue, Orange, Yellow-Green, Yellow, Orange, Blue) Written by Aleister Crowley in 1908, the full title of Liber 671 is "Liber Pyramidos sub figurâ DCLXXI" and is "A Ritual of Self Initiation based upon the Formula of the Neophyte.". At this point Crowley is still using his version of the Golden Dawn system. By making a "mistake", Crowley is pointing us to the "Secret Word"; "The Secret Word of Magick is Mercury, 8", which has two more forms: "The Mystery of Dissolution (Mercury, The Snake)", and the Mercurial Virtue (Liber AL); Curses and promises; meaning obscure. These are the symbols of Sulphur, Salt and Mercury, which are alchemical. The combination of the three Mysteries point to the Caduceus. Here we make a slight detour. Eliphas Levi comments that the final T of TAROT tells the adept to return to the beginning of the word - the final letter is redundant, and now we finally have TARO, 671. ## 671 is Adonai, The Lord 671 is the number ADNY when the letters are expanded. Otherwise ADNY is 65 an important number, for ADNY means "Lord", i.e. Jesus Christ. ## Anagrams of TARO The anagrams of TARO are significant. - ROTA - the Wheel (Latin) - ThORA - The Gate (Hebrew) - AThOR - The Goddess Hathor, the Lady of the Path of Daleth - ORAT - To Speak (Latin) - ThORA - (Hebrew) The Law, as in Torah, and as in The Book of Law: Liber AL or Liber 220. It is not surprising then that Crowley consistently uses TARO and ROTA to refer to the tarot, hence the name of this website, where all these powerful anagrams are implicit. Aleister Crowley says of 671: > This important number marks the identity of the Augoeides with the Way itself (“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”) and shows the Taro as a key; and that the Law itself is nothing else than this. For this reason the outer College of the A∴A∴ is crowned by this “knowledge and conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel.” > > This number too is that of the Ritual of Neophyte. See Liber XIII.
